Toyota has made significant improvements to the 2022 Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ in preparation for next year’s rally, optimizing it for the latest race regulations.

These include larger running gear, 37-inch tires (up from 32″), and an upgraded suspension system with increased travel, as the previous 280mm limit has been increased to 350mm.

However, the big news is the addition of a brand new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine derived from that found in the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300.

Toyota has not disclosed output figures yet, but claims they are “significantly higher” than the 305kW and 650Nm of the road car.

We are delighted to announce a team that is very similar to the one that competed last year,” team principal Glyn Hall said.

With Nasser and Giniel spearheading our attack and Henk gaining confidence, we are excited to challenge the Dakar Rally in 2022. Our new GR DKR Hilux T1+ is progressing well, and we are confident that it will enable us to compete at a higher level in January.

Giniel de Villiers stated that while Dakar is one of the most challenging races on the planet, he believes it is ideal for the new Hilux.

The new wheels, suspension travel, and most importantly, the switch to the Land Cruiser’s turbocharged petrol engine, is certain to make a significant difference to our campaign,” the former Dakar winner stated.

The engine is extremely responsive, which enables us to take the new car to its limits. Saudi Arabia has established itself as a deserving host of the race, and we anticipate that this will continue in 2022.

The 2022 Dakar Rally will return to the Saudi Arabian desert, albeit in a clockwise direction this time.

The race will begin on January 2 in Ha’il, the northernmost city, and travel south to the Empty Quarter.

On January 8, the race will stop in the Saudi capital of Riyadh for a rest day before continuing south-westward to the finish in the city of Jeddah on January 14.
